Fall 2023 Computer Classes

The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library offers computer classes that meet the need of most of our library patrons. Whether you are a beginner in need of basic computer or internet skills or desire to gain skills for the job market we have you the patron in mind.

Registration is required. To register fill out this form. Please call 356-6188 Ext #20 for more information. Classes begin at 1 p.m., unless otherwise noted,  in the MakerLab. Classes are free of charge.

THE BASICS

Introduction to Windows 11

This course will introduce the student to many of the features of the Microsoft Windows 11 operating system.  The student  will explore and navigate the Windows 11 platform functions & features, including the new Start Menu, Windows 11’s digital assistant, Cortana, the new Quick Access feature in File Explorer; selected features of the Settings menu, and much more.

Internet Safety Basics

This class will provide training to successfully access and navigate the Internet. Learn how to protect yourself from scams and misinformation in the online environment. Basic computer and online safety measures will be addressed to recognize and protect against threats.

Basic File Management

Understanding how and where files are saved is an essential computing skill.  Using Windows 11, the student will learn how to navigate File Explorer, understand file extensions, how to save files from the internet to the computer, and how to view and save files using a USB drive.  Tip and techniques for organizing and maintaining documents and folders will also be discussed.

GOOGLE APPS

You must have a Google Account (i.e. Gmail) to attend this series of courses

Using Google Drive and Google Docs

Learn all aboutThe Cloud”, what it is and how it is used. In this course, we will be exploring Google Drive and seeing how it can help in your everyday life. Google Drive is a free service from Google that allows you to store files online and access them anywhere using the cloud. Because of this you can access your files from any computer that has internet service.  Learn how to use Google Docs. Google Docs is a free and simple online word processor, similar to Microsoft Word. We’ll learn how to: create a document with a variety of formatting, photos, and links; save and manage your documents; understand all the changes made to a document over time; and work collaboratively on a document.

Google Sheets Basics

Learn how to use Google Sheets. Google Sheets is a free and simple online spreadsheet creator, similar to Microsoft Excel. We’ll learn how to: organize data in a spreadsheet, calculate numbers automatically in a spreadsheet using formulas, create graphs from data in a spreadsheet, and work collaboratively on a spreadsheet.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY

Using Ipad and Iphone

Apple’s iPhone and iPad both run on the mobile operating system called iOS. The student will learn the basics of setting up and using your iOS device, look at some useful apps, and leave plenty of time for your questions. Bring your iPhone or iPad (or both) and improve your skills! Note: Please make sure you know your Apple ID and password for use in class.

Using Android

Learn how to navigate commonly used features on your Android smartphone or tablet. There will be time for answering your questions. Please bring your own device. Note: Please make sure you know your Google Account and password for use in class.
